New Accessibility Features Available in Windows 8
Microsoft's next version of their operating systems, Windows 8 is to be released in August and on the shelves by the end of October. This release, as others, continues to showcase improvements to the programs accessibility. They have ensured full compliance with industry standards for web accessibility. Part of the focus with this release has been to improve the accessibility of touch devices such as tabets and smartphones. In this release the magnifier has been upgraded to include white borders, with (+) and (-) signs, located around the screen that allows the user to easily adjust the screens position and magnifiication. The functions controlled by the border can be controlled by touch and the keyboard. They also allow you to easily zoo out and drag the zoom screen to where on the psge you would like to zoom in.
The function of the narrator has also improved. A person can now drag their finger accross the screen and the narrator will read what is under their finger. Multi-touch capabilities make it possible for the user to activate an item by touching the screen with two fingers and stop the narration by touching with three. The narrators voice and speed settings can be easily adjusted and the user is able to create customizable commands.
Both the magnifier and the narrator can be set to launch automatically on startup.
