Kenguru - The New Wheelchair Accessible Electric Car
It seems like everyone is coming up with new ways to make vehicles more accessible for wheelchair users. The newest in this trend is the Electric Car developed by Community Cars out of Pflugerville, Texas. Their vehicle, Kenguru, provides a environmentally friendly option for accessible transportation.
The Kenguru was originally designed in Hungary, but the company had since run out of money. Stacy Koern, a lawyer who uses a wheelchair, disccovered the vehicle and raised 2 million dollars to buy the company and brought it here to the US.
The streamline one seater is completely electrical, features a rear entry ramp, reaches a speed of 25mph and can travel for 60 miles per charge. The company is currently in the process of developing a joystick version of the handlebar controlled car. Its price is set at about $25,000, but the company sites government organizations that can be used to offset some of the cost.
